Report cards are being sent home today.  Please sign the envelope and return it to school next week (you can keep the report card itself).

We are working on a reading project where the students dress up as the main character of the historical fiction book they just finished reading.  Please don't feel like you need to buy anything for this or go to elaborate measures to come up with a costume.  We will do the presentations next Friday, Feb 7.  For the presentation, students will share a summary of the book they chose and then have classmates interview them as if they were the main character (while dressed up as the character).  We will work on the summarizing and interviewing at school, but if you could give a hand at home with the dress up part, that would be great.

Also, I will be sending home a list of students' names for Valentine cards.  Please remember that if your child wishes to bring cards to pass out, he/she needs to have one for every member of the class (14 students).  Thanks!

Please check with your child about the green earbuds note we sent home today.  Also, we are very low on pencils.  If you are able to donate a box, it would be very much appreciated!!

Warning…very long post.  I haven't posted in quite a while, so I am playing catch-up.  We have had a busy few weeks!

In social studies, we made salt dough maps of Vermont. (These were sent home already, and I hope they made it home in one piece).
Whitney helps mix up the salt dough.

We are finishing up our study of Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume (the kids loved this one). We have also just finished On the Banks of Plum Creek (book 3 in the Little House series) and have started Green Mountain Hero as our next read aloud.  The kids all chose a historical fiction book from the library.  Please ask your child about the book he/she chose.  See if your child can tell you some ways that life for the characters is similar to and different from his/her own life.  Your child should finish this book by Jan 31.

We have started using a HART dollar reward system at school.  Students earn dollars by completing homework on time, using good manners, exhibiting good behavior, etc.  On Store Days, the kids can buy coupons with their HART dollars.  Coupons include 10 minutes of extra computer time, wear a hat for the day, and sit next to a friend for the day.

As a special treat, we had the opportunity to cook with the ladies in the cafeteria.  We made beet cake and carrot cake.  Yummy!

Before our holiday break, a guest speaker came to talk to us about composting.  Very interesting!

Also before break, we got together with our book buddies (Mrs. Bodnar's first grade class) for a fun craft project.  We made little hats out of yarn.

Mr. Moreno joined us for PE class last week.  Check out this action!
